Pansy Lake Trail

This weekend my husband, daughter and I drove out to the “Bull of the Woods Wilderness” Hiked and Camped the Pansey Lake Trail.

Actually we hiked in the long way I think it was called “Bull of the Woods Trail” about 3 miles at the top hiking down into Pansy Lake. WOW I am speechless! The hike was beautiful – breaktaking! Everything you hope for in a Hike! Starting at the top, the views were amazing. I could of just kept hiking for days!  My daughter was a trooper – she loved every moment of the 3 mile hike! She is getting so good at this for being only 3 years old. We are so proud of her.

There is a shorter trail “Pansy Lake Trail”.. 1 mile into the lake. We took this way out! We did not want to push our daughter by making her hike 3 miles mostly up hill back to the car. So my husband hiked out the 3 miles, drove to the 1 mile trail and hiked back to our camp.

I advise everyone to take this hike and go camping at this lake. So much serenity… so much beauty, lush, wilderness… there was only one other family camping there and their camp was not near us.. a few day hikers coming in and out. Great Weather!!

There were lots of mosquitos — we used (against our usual beliefs) – Woods Off Deet and thank goodness we did or we would of gotten eaten alive! besides the few mosquitos nipping at us — it was more than worth every moment! I am told that August and September are better camping months because there are less mosquito’s.

why do i live in the city?

Last Hike: HorseTail Hike

What an beautiful FUN hike! We had an awesome time today! THIS IS A MUST GO TO HIKE! Kids will love this hike – Parents will appreciate the lush beauty! Waterfalls! Perfect amount of Shade and sun! Great Views! Not very crowded! Wow! This is my favorite Day Hike by far for an easy Kids hike! There is some up hill elevation and cliff hiking – but nothing crazy, nothing too hard, nothing scary! Just lots of fun!

We hiked at the kids pace and only went as far as the foot bridge … about 1 mile in(?!).

I would love to go on this hike again – I am willing to re-post this hike later in the summer if others are interested in hiking this with us!

Thanks Zahra and Kellie for hiking with us today!! Zahra and my daughter have become some excellent little hikers!

FYI: Most likely this trail is super crowed on the weekends. i advise to hike this on a weekday for less people.

Last Hike: Beacon Rock Hike

Yesterday was a beautiful easy, quick hike. A mile and half straight up and back down with switch backs. Railing the whole way to hang on to if needed. We had fun!

However, what I did not realize was that the book I used to schedule this hike did not clarify the information (or I misread the information which is possible). The actual Beacon rock trail is not a water fall hike. The Pools of Winds trail is a separate trail across Hy 14 near the campground. In the Kids hike book I used to schedule this hike they combined the hikes – i assumed they were trails that ran into each other.

All in all – we had a short beautiful hike.. and although i did consider heading over to the Pools of Wind trail I did not want to push my daughter to do another hike.. and the other children seemed as though it was nap time.

So we missed the water falls (bummer!) but we had a amazing view of the gorge!

Last Hike

Last Wednesday’s Hike at Oak Island was mellow. It was an easy Hike on a over grown trail, so strudy jogger strollers are possible.

Shelia and Natalie were new to the day hike. Thanks for joining us! It was great meeting you and Natalie. I know you live a little farther south, but we hope to see you again soon.

The Oak Island hike was easy, it was a perfect day out. There is a great spot next to the water to sit and have lunch, however, there was a school group on this hike the same day so we were unable to find a spot on the tiny beach next to the water.

all in all it was enjoyable and a great short easy hike for the kids.

see you on the next hike! hope more moms and kids will join us in the near future

Hikes Canceled this week June 6-8

After a long weekend of hiking & Camping along the Illinois River Trail – I need to give my daughter a  break from hiking for a moment.

What a trooper she was! She has the energy – we kept to her pace – it was some long days, lots of mosquitoes once we made it to our destination– but the moments we had on the river camping and swimming — the moments along the trail we hung out in creeks – dipping our feet and enjoying the great outdoors — it was worth it to us.

And what a amazing hike and view! wow!.

However FYI – The above trail is not for kids. We were given mis-information and suprised at the hike…. although our daughter made the trip – I do not advise anyone to take a young child on this trail.

I am doing more re-vamping with picking the hikes for our group. I am getting more help from others – so please bare with me. ALL SUGGESTIONS WELCOMED!

Hope to see you next week at Sauvie Island!

Afterwards… Hike #1

Well the hike was successful at WildWood trail. Slightly confusing with so many other trails that veered off the 3.6 mile trail we were hiking on — but we did it. Thanks to Tammy and Jennifer we all just worked together at the children’s paces and made it through the hike. We stopped near the Japaneses Gardens on a grassy area and had lunch letting the kids rest.

I learned some things on this trail:

My daughter is a hiking warrior when her dad is around; however with me she pushes buttons and it is more difficult to keep moving her forward. BUT She did good on the trail and I am proud of her! (She actually does amazing when she hikes with me and her dad.) The other children were in hiking packs being carried so she wanted me to carry her most of the time (she is a 3 year old 40 pound child – that is not happening), so there were struggles between she and I, which at times made the hike frustrating for me. Future hikes will be great for her if more children her age came along.

The element of surprise is going to happen on some of these hikes – be prepared, patient, and have the open minds that we are out doors in nature- a crying child is ok – nothing will go exactly as planned!
Just because I do not know the trail (some of these trails are new to me), others moms are nice enough not to have high expectations in my abilities of the trail. On the weekends when we go hiking with my daughter, daddy is the lead and all I have to do is follow and enjoy myself. Without my husband, I am lead, (suppose to be?) knowledgeable one, and mother to a three year old – UGH! can be a difficult task.

Always expect there maybe a steep uphill climb.

I started this group just to get out of the house with my daughter and into nature, meet other moms, and enjoy the summer. If any moms come on the trail and happen to DO know the trail , or would like to lead, be map warrior — please I invite you to let us follow you! I am up for the thought that we are out together helping each other!

Otherwise please bare with me, we will be going at the kids pace, and enjoying nature without the headache. If we don’t happen to make the whole trail — that is ok! The goal is to be in nature and have fun with our kids!

Thanks to Tammy and Jennifer – as I was feeling frustrated with my daughter – they laughed and lead the way! If was fun – thanks for joining me and I hope to see you both on another trail soon.

If there are any moms who would like to set up a hiking trip on a day that is not scheduled — please let me know. I can post it (once you can schedule it) just because I most likely won’t to be able to make it doesn’t mean you can’t be there — you don’t need me there. Everyone who would like to make it to your scheduled day hike can sign up via the site.
